Pain is a $117 Billion Dollar Epidemic
Injuries and pain are an epidemic throughout the US. Here are some statistics:
- Every year more than 100 million Americans receive treatment for at least one injury or chronic pain.
- Insurance industry research indicates that costs of medical treatment for work injuries and injuries from automobile accidents exceed $40 billion annually.
- A 2007 JAMA article reported that Americans spent another $51 billion annually for treatment of back injuries and back pain.
- Data from National Health Accounts estimate that the total cost to treat just injuries in the U.S. is $117 billion each year, but the National Safety Council pegs that number at closer to $600 billion. For perspective, the U.S. weight loss industry is estimated at $40 billion annually.
Studies consistently show that Americans are dissatisfied with available treatment and as baby boomers age, they are maintaining their active lifestyles and will be more prone to injuries, and will seek out experts to treat them.
